THE DRAWINGS COLLECTION

The Drawings Collection, forming part of the British Architectural Library, owned by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) contains more than 600,000 images making it the largest of its type in the world! Not exclusively British, it includes for example the vast majority of the surviving Andrea Palladio drawings, many 18th century Italian stage designs, a large group of drawings by Indian artists, or of India, from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as drawings by Gold Medallists such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.

The British collections include architectural drawings from about 1500A.D. as well as designs for furniture, fabrics, ceramics, sculpture and architectural ornaments. All major British architects are represented including Inigo Jones, Sir Christopher Wren, James Gibbs, Robert Adam, Sir John Soane, William Burges, Sir George Gilbert Scott, Philip Webb, Sir George Lutyens, and C.F.A. Voysey. Other objects in the collection include medals, furniture, drawing instruments and portraits.

THE INSTITUTE

The RIBA is a world-renowned institution. It exists to further the cause of architecture, as its Royal Charter states, as well as to support the interests of its members (about 28,000) who represent three quarters of the registered architects in the UK.

From the beginning, a library was regarded as essential to the institute's role of developing high standards of architectural education and practice. The founding members recognised that the library should contain more than printed books adding to it architectural drawings, archives, and in due course photographs which now form the special collections of the library
