The definitive and authentic range of historic paint colours taken from original drawings in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA©) Drawings Collection. Browse through these pages and contact us for related licensing opportunities.

The architectural drawings collection at the Royal Institute of British Architects is the largest and finest collection of plans, designs and sketches of its type in the world. Many feature the original colours specified by the architects concerned.

Since 1834, when the Institute was founded, its library has been regarded as essential in encouraging high standards of architecture. The RIBA(c) Drawings Collection developed as part of the Library, acquiring comprehensive examples of good practice from past and present. Over the years it has become the collective memory of the profession in Britain, a record of the work of this country's finest architects, and it forms the inspiration for the new Crown Trade historical range and a unique testimony to the authentic colours of the period.

The collection encompasses work in a variety of architectural styles, from the early 16th century to the present day, and covers a wide selection of famous architects from home and abroad. Major British architects are well represented; Inigo Jones, Sir Christopher Wren, Robert Adam, Sir Edwin Lutyens and C.F.A.Voysey, as well as prominent contemporaries such as Norman Foster and Richard Rogers.

Drawings in the Collection are not exclusively British, nor are they exclusively designs for buildings. Its greatest treasures are drawings by the 16th century Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Apart from building designs, there are drawings for interior decorations, ceramics, wallpapers, fabrics and furniture.

This range and diversity has enabled Crown Trade to draw colours from a wide variety of periods with unique accuracy. Because so many works are the gifts of past and present members of the Institute and their heirs, it is possible to take an extraordinarily focused view of what has interested and influenced architects through the ages.

From this wealth of material six important architectural movements have been selected to form the basis of six colour palettes within the new range.

Six colour palettes have been created entitled Palladian, Neo-Classical, Gothic Revival, Victorian Eclectic, Arts & Crafts and 50's Sketchbook. Five are based on these important historical architectural periods or movements and one on a sketchbook from the 50s by a living architect and colourist. Each is distinct in style but complements the others to form a collection of 90 colours

In keeping with the authentic looks, the colours are available in a flat matt finish for walls that is washable and resists marking, and an acrylic eggshell for woodwork.
